Copernicus is the European environmental monitoring and security programme led jointly by the European Union and the European Space Agency (ESA). Its mission is to give Europe an independent Earth-observation capability to meet the environmental, climate and security challenges it faces.
Comprising a constellation of 20 satellites grouped by family, the Sentinel-1 to Sentinel-6 missions are geared towards specific objectives like radar and high-resolution optical remote sensing, altimetry and measuring the composition of Earth’s atmosphere.
Since 2009, Telespazio France has been a key player in the Copernicus programme, notably through its involvement in the launch of the Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 missions, as well as in developing and validating the ground segments for the Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-3 missions, setting up the Mission Performance Centre (MPC) for the Sentinel-2 mission and developing the ngEO (Next Generation Earth Observation) satellite imagery catalogue for ESA.
